Questioning What Training to Take?

The name Psych Med School came to me while I was earning my doctorate in Behavioral Health with a concentration in Psychedelic Medicine, as well as studying for my psychiatry board exam. Diving into both psychiatric medical studies as well as psychedelic medicine—I realized I was in “psych med school” myself. The name is both literal and a play on words—a nod to my own academic journey and a resource for anyone seeking schooling in psychedelic medicine.

The best place to start is not with a program—it’s with clarity. The psychedelic training landscape is broad, expensive, and evolving quickly. The SCOUTT™ self-assessment was designed to help you get grounded in what you’re looking for before you invest in anything. From there, the podcast allows you to hear directly from educators and program leaders so you can explore the ecosystem with context instead of confusion.

Not necessarily. While some psychedelic medicine pathways are clinical and license-dependent, others involve education, research, integration support, community work, or program development. There isn’t one “right” way to enter this field, and there isn’t one path everyone is supposed to follow. I believe this ecosystem is bigger than credentials, and people from all backgrounds are welcome. This space is bigger than any one role, and there is room here for curiosity, lived experience, and different paths.

Ketamine is currently legal for medical use in the U.S. under specific conditions, which is why ketamine-assisted therapy training often looks different from training related to psilocybin or MDMA, which are still federally regulated outside of research and specific state frameworks. Understanding these differences is essential before choosing a program.

Online programs can offer flexibility and foundational knowledge, while in-person training may provide experiential learning, mentorship, and community. The right choice depends on your learning style, schedule, budget, and goals. More expensive or more immersive does not automatically mean more aligned.
